Psalm 19

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

We open saying thank you for the many mothers in this room. We pray today that they would feel loved and appreciated and cared for as they make their children feel loved, appreciated, and cared for.

And we pray LORD too for those who feel grieved by this day — we pray for those who’ve lost mothers, who cannot be mothers, for those who never met their mom, or for those who had mothers that were cruel, or abusive, or simply weren’t mothers in the way they should have been.

We ask that you would impress upon us the truth of Isaiah 49:15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!”

Father, as we consider Psalm 19…

We thank you for the gift of creation that shouts your praises and glorious splendor regardless of what the weather is.

We thank you for blue skies and sunshine that remind us of your goodness.

We thank you for rain that waters the grass and the crops that displays your kindness.

We thank you for the thunder and lightning that assure us of your power.

We thank you for gentle breezes, snowfall, cool mornings, fog, and we even thank you for earth shattering hurricanes and storms that teach us to fear you.

These things all display your glorious splendor, in speech that is discernible if we listen for it.

We pray, LORD, like the sun in the sky, that we would run our courses with joy — as if everyday spent with you is a wedding day.

LORD, as people who often struggle to get excited about your word, whether read, taught, or sung, help us to take home the words in your word about your word:

That it is perfect and is powerful enough to revive our souls.

That your testimony is true and makes us wise.

That your precepts are right and they bring us great joy.

That your word, contrary to what is around us, endures forever and is more precious than all the gold and silver we could ever find.

And in obeying your word, there is GREAT reward.

Father, we are people who often do not keep your word and oftentimes we are unaware of it, so by your Spirit’s power would you reveal to us our hidden faults, displaying to us our own hypocrisy, showing us the logs in our own eyes.

But LORD, as you show us these things, remind us we are declared innocent in Christ. That because of His sacrifice, despite our many sins, we are spotless and blameless before you with no need to be afraid.

And LORD, in view of forgiveness, may we reverently fear you — not only in our actions, but in our hearts and minds.

May our thoughts of you and our thoughts of our neighbors be acceptable to you, our Rock and Our Redeemer.

We pray this in the name of Jesus and all God’s people said: Amen.
