Psalm 39
August 30, 2026 O Lord, may the truths of this psalm be so clear to us, so weighty, so heavy on our hearts, so gripping in their reality, that we, like David, cannot hold them inside. May they burst forth in prayer, in confession where needed, and in conversation with others.
Heavenly Father, show us the brevity of life—how short life really is. Give us your perspective. Save us from distraction, from fear, from self-deception, from apathy, and from whatever else might blunt the message of this psalm. Let us not fail to see and feel that life is but a breath, a vapor. May that perspective play a significant role in how we live our lives.
And Lord, it may be that our circumstances this morning are like King David’s: we are under your hand of discipline and that has made life’s brevity clearer. Or perhaps we need your hand of discipline, for we are covering some sin, refusing to be honest with you about it. May we not delay any further in coming clean with you. Like David, may our posture be, “And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.” May that hope ground our confession of sin and our repentance. May your discipline—coming from the hand of a loving Father, not a sentencing Judge—woo us toward you and away from sin.
How glad we are, Lord Jesus, that you submitted yourself to a brief life, an unjust death, suffering divine discipline—indeed, divine judgment and condemnation—not for your sins but for ours. Thank you for standing in for us. Thank you for willingly submitting to God’s gaze not turning away from judgment. Thank you for yielding all hope of smiling on this side of death. Thank you for departing this life but answering David’s forlorn words “before I depart and am no more” with your resurrection greeting, “Peace be with you!” Thank you for bringing to light eternal life beyond our life in this age. Thank you for saving us from being a mere vapor, a mere breath.
This morning, Heavenly Father, we thank you for summertime. Thank you for the unique and refreshing blessings that we’ve been able to enjoy this summer. Equip us through that refreshment for the fall season that lies just ahead. Help us in these days of beginning or transitioning to a new school year. May we follow you, Lord Jesus, in this seasonal change, and may we steward wisely the responsibilities and opportunities that fall will bring to us. May we reflect you to others in ways bright and attractive.
We ask your help, Lord, with a variety of individual needs and circumstances represented among us this morning. Give your grace and do your will in and through physical weakness and pain, relational strain and difficulties, emotional grief and sorrow, financial challenge and stress, circumstantial burden and perplexity, inward struggles of all sorts. And guide us collectively as a church as well. Help us as we continue to pray about, think about, and talk about our physical facility and our space needs. What is your will, Lord? What do you wish to do? Show us specific actions we can take, reveal to us foundational issues we need to address, and refine and prune us for ever-greater fruitfulness.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. And all God’s people said, “Amen!”
