Psalm 31
May 25, 2025 Psalm 31 is 24 verses of lament and trust, or trust and lament. It is difficult to contrast these two themes. Indeed they are very intertwined with each other. We would do well to mimic this Psalm of David in our own lives. We lament and complain about numerous items in our life. We have broken relationships, with some seeking us harm. Verse 8 says “You have not given me into the hands of the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.” Social and public media speak lies and distort the truth. Verse 18-19 pleads “Let their lying lips be silenced, for with pride and contempt they speak arrogantly against the righteous. 19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you.” Our bones waste away, our eyes grow weak with sorrow, our soul and body with grief. For those of us who trust in idols, the comforts of those idols will be brief and fleeting. For we who trust in the Lord, we will be delivered from these traps. Lord, help us to marry our laments with your promises.
Lord we pray for CB as slips away from us here on Earth and towards your eternal kingdom. We pray that her family would see her hope and trust that she has in you. We pray her family would be comforted and put their trust in You Lord.
As we celebrate this Memorial Day weekend, we celebrate and mourn those who have sacrificed their lives to protect not just our country, but all of the people in our country. Thank you for their service and their desire to protect our freedoms. We are incredibly grateful for our freedom to worship you, and share your good news with our neighbors and friends.
We pray for our president, our governor, our mayors, our school boards, and other civic leadership. We pray they make decisions that promote human flourishing, that are good for society, and promote justice and freedom. We pray for those who are oppressed and taken advantage of by evil systems and evil rulers. We lift them up and look for you to guide us in how to love and care for the vulnerable and the oppressed. We pray for the Edge youth group service projects this summer that will bring them into new or unfamiliar neighborhoods that are not that many miles from home, and yet will feel quite different. May we be helpful, and observant, and may Your Holy Spirit move in our lives to love and serve our neighbors and these communities.
We pray that D, A, and P enjoy their long weekend away, and we lift up DL as he preaches your Word to us this morning. May we be encouraged, and moved to apply this teaching to our lives and be transformed.
We pray all of this in the name of our glorious Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Amen
