Psalm 54
January 11, 2026 Lord, your name is wonderful and worthy of trust. Your might is supreme and worthy of trust. Thank you for David’s trust in you. Thank you for answering his prayer and saving him from his enemies and from death.
Thank you for saving the Son of David—Jesus, the fulfiller of this psalm—from his enemies as well. Yet you saved him not from death but through death. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for willingly submitting to defeat by crucifixion so that you could be the sacrifice that atoned for our sins. Heavenly Father, how astonishingly you vindicated your King by your might, raising him from the dead. How strikingly, as with David but so greatly beyond David, you saved Jesus by your name—glorifying your name, as he asked you to do, by raising him from the dead. As David rejoiced in your deliverance, inviting the people to join his joy by singing this psalm, so we rejoice in your deliverance of our King. As your victory for David gave ancient Israel security, so your victory for the Son of David gives us decisive, everlasting security.
May we live in alignment with that victory and security this week and beyond. May the earnest prayer, the persevering faith, the joyful praise of this psalm be on the grow in our lives as we revel in the triumph that our King has secured for us. Amid that strategic victory, we face daily tactical battles and skirmishes with the world, which often subverts us; with the devil, who often seduces us; and with the flesh, which often subdues us. By your name, Lord, save us and by your might vindicate our faith in Jesus. In these tactical battles with relationships, with family, with money, with health, with work, with school, with leisure, with inward issues: deliver us from defeat at the hands of our enemies. You are our helper; you are the upholder of our lives. We trust in you.
We rejoice, Father, at your amazing posture in the present age toward your human enemies. At the great Day of Judgment you will put an end to them, as this psalm says. But now your justice waits, patiently, as you extend your invitation to your enemies to be reconciled to you, to lay down their arms, to seek true life through your King, to trustfully, joyfully embrace him and thrive as his subjects in his kingdom. Praise be to you for your justice that waits, for your mercy that invites, and for your mission that you’ve given us, to relay that good news to those around us. Grant us the privilege of seeing others become reconciled to you through the risen King, Jesus Christ.
We ask for that multiplication of your good news in Asia through our global partners, B and T. Thanks for their restored health and their upcoming trip to the States. In their absence, may “Uncle” and others continue to grow and advance. Bless the sales and growth of Ginger Gems, and its local leaders, unto the supply of their financial needs.
We are mindful, Father, of brothers and sisters in Christ who live in places in the world where the hostility of your enemies expresses itself horribly and traumatically through cruel and even murderous persecution. O Lord, how these fellow believers must cry out with today’s psalm, “Save us, God, by your name; vindicate us by your might!” We intercede for them, Lord. Do that for them. Sustain them. Provide for them. Comfort them. Enable them to be faithful to you to the very end, whatever that end may look like. May Jesus’ resurrection be their mainstay—one day, one moment, at a time.
We are also mindful, Lord, of the events in Minneapolis this past week. We mourn the loss of life, and we pray for the bereaved. We remember the vulnerable and those who are suffering—from all angles—and we ask your help and protection. You know, Lord, the turmoil that is roiling and the wide range of emotions and responses that are in play. We mourn the elusiveness of true, full-orbed justice in our society at the present time, and we ask that you would teach us, as subjects under the just rule of our perfect King, to be an influence for good in the spheres of opportunity that we have, and that we should create. As you have taught us, we pray for the leaders of our country—national, state, and local. Grant them wisdom and help. Give us the resolve to pursue and embrace the truth regardless of our predisposition. In the current environment of posturing and accusation and the breakdown of trust, we need grace, trustworthiness, and boldness. Teach us to do your will, putting Christ on display in all our interactions amid the chaos. Make us instruments of your peace.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. And all God’s people said, “Amen!”
